Utah Biomedical Engineering Program #5 in the nation -- according to the customers!

In what may be the most important ranking of graduate BME programs in the nation, based solely on rankings and reviews from current or recent graduate students as compiled by the non-profit Graduate Programs Foundation in Spring 2014, the University of Utah's Department of Bioengineering's graduate program was #5 in the nation, well ahead of Stanford University at # 14 and Johns Hopkins at # 20.

Tied for 7th Best Faculty H-Index in the Nation! Faculty Publication Impact Ranks in the Top 10, Nationwide.

The University of Utah’s Department of Bioengineering’s median Google Scholar h-Index for tenured/tenure-track faculty benchmarked against US News and World Report peers tied for 7th in the nation. In 2005 Jorge E. Hirsch, Dept. of Physics, University of California San Diego, proposed "the index h", which gives an estimate of the importance, significance, and broad impact of a scientist’s cumulative research contributions. While there is much debate about the manner in which it is implemented, it is widely regarded as a significant measure of the impact of a faculty member’s work.

New Tenure Track Line Added to the Dept. of Bioengineering

Dr. Chris Butson, PhD, joined the Department as a new tenure track Associate Professor. He brings an internationally recognized research program that employs a variety of approaches to study therapeutic and diagnostic neuromodulation using electrical stimulation. The addition Dr. Butson raises the number of tenured and tenure track professors to twenty five.

With seven new faculty lines added in the last 4 years, the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Utah is one of the fastest growing Departments in the nation. Its growth is fueled by student demand and strong state support. With 27 PhDs awarded last year the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Utah ranks among the nation’s elite in the number of PhDs graduated in 2014.
