The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation has named Annicka Carter, an undergraduate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Utah, as a 2013 Goldwater Scholar.
Carter is one of three undergraduates to receive this honor in Utah and one of 271 Goldwater Scholars in the United States. Her career goal is to earn a Ph.D. in translational biology and conduct research directly with physicians and patients. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to attract undergraduate students of such high quality as Annicka who could have gone to any of the top departments in the country”, says Patrick A. Tresco, Chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, “She is an outstanding person who has distinguished herself by her scholarship, research & innovation projects and her exceptional service record; not to mention the fact that she also has a 4.0.”
Goldwater Scholars are selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,107 mathematics, science and engineering students nationwide. These scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year per Scholar.
“I am honored to be receiving the Goldwater Scholarship. I have had a strong passion for research since I can remember and it gives me a lot of confidence to be considered a student who has outstanding potential to pursue what I love,” says Carter. “I plan to use the award wisely and pay back the Goldwater Foundation by working hard to further science and medicine.”
