Join Us at UBEC 2024: Utah’s Biomedical Engineering Conference
The Utah Biomedical Engineering Conference (UBEC) has become a key event for biomedical research in Utah, bringing together students, faculty, clinicians, and industry professionals from the region. This year, the 19th Annual UBEC will be held on Saturday, September 21st at the University of Utah Alumni House (UU campus).
UBEC was created in 2005 by former Department of Biomedical Engineering Chair Patrick Tresco to provide a dedicated forum for Utah’s biomedical engineering community to connect, share research, and collaborate. Now, nearly two decades later, it remains a dynamic platform that showcases regional talent and supports the growth of Utah’s medtech industry.
Keynote Speaker: Kirk Ririe
We are honored to welcome Kirk Ririe as this year’s keynote speaker. Ririe’s pioneering work in molecular biology created the beginning of Idaho Technology, later rebranded as BioFire (now a part of bioMerieux). Ririe has held a variety of positions including as CEO of BioFire Defense and Chief Innovation Officer of bioMerieux. Ririe recently co-launched a new business, Faro Molecular Inc. where he continues to develop molecular biology tools to improve human health. Ririe’s keynote talk will inspire attendees through a compelling narrative of translational research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in biotech.
A Focus on Utah Alumni
This year’s UBEC is particularly special as we will hear from a panel of Biomedical Engineering PhD alumni. Attendees can gain valuable insights from former students who have gone on to make significant impacts in their fields. The panel will include a Q&A session, providing a chance for UBEC attendees to interact directly with these accomplished professionals.
A Day of Engagement and Exploration
UBEC is designed to be an immersive experience into biomedical research and the local biomedical community. The day will feature multiple sessions of oral presentations and poster sessions, showcasing the breadth and depth of research conducted in the region. Attendees will have ample opportunities to network, discuss their work, and explore potential collaborations with peers and industry leaders alike. If you are interested in presenting your work, make sure to submit your abstract (at no cost!) on the UBEC website by August 20.
For the first time, UBEC will include an exposition featuring local companies and organizations, offering a valuable chance for students and professionals to connect with potential employers and collaborators. Students are encouraged to bring resumés and chat with recruiters, speakers, and attendees about available work and internship opportunities.
